7 engine codes across 5 Land Rover models: what off-road use demands of a diesel engine

A Defender working on a farm, a Discovery loaded up for a long journey, a Range Rover Evoque doing daily city runs with motorway bursts: these uses have nothing in common, yet they share one constant. Land Rover engines are put to work under severe thermal and mechanical conditions — frequent loading, towing, and off-road traversal — which accelerates wear on piston rings, bearings and cylinder heads. When the engine gives out, correctly identifying the replacement part is the most critical step, well before anything else.

Same engine capacity, different blocks: don't mix up the families

The Land Rover diesel range between 2007 and 2024 is built around distinct architectures that are not interchangeable. The 2.2 TD4 found in the Freelander and Range Rover Evoque is based on the 224DT block, developed in partnership with Ford, also known as the DT224 or ZSD-422 depending on the market — three codes, one block. The 2.4 TDCi in the Defender uses the 244DT, a Ford Duratorq architecture, distinct from the 2.2. The 2.2 TDCi in the Defender uses the 224DT in an adapted version. The 3.0 TDV6 in the Range Rover and Discovery is the 306DT, a V6 block exclusive to Land Rover with no Ford equivalent. Finally, the 2.0 D in recent versions of the Evoque corresponds to the 204DTD, a next-generation Ingenium block, incompatible with all previous units. The older Defender uses the 2.5 Tdi (code 23L), a block predating the TD4 series, which must not be confused with the more recent units of apparently similar engine capacity.

Common symptoms and key points to check when identifying the engine

On both the 244DT and the 224DT, cylinder head cracking and EGR circuit faults are among the most frequent reasons for replacement. The 306DT is more prone to timing chain failures and abnormal oil consumption on high-mileage units. For the 204DTD Ingenium, returns are mainly linked to oil pressure faults and failures caused by insufficient servicing. In all cases, the engine code stamped on the block — not just the engine capacity — is the only reliable identifier for selecting the correct reconditioned engine. The vehicle's year of first registration refines identification further, particularly on the Defender, which went through several generations of engines between 2007 and 2024. The engines listed here are sold as bare units on an exchange basis: ancillary components (turbo, alternator, starter motor, injection pump) must be transferred from the old unit.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Land Rover engine cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Land Rover engine compatible with my exact model?

We offer 9 references covering the main Land Rover models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact engine for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original engine rebuilt in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
