4 Suzuki models, 6 engine codes: petrol VVT or diesel DDiS – the families are not interchangeable

Across Suzuki models sold between 2004 and 2018, two distinct approaches coexist: petrol units with variable valve timing VVT — the M13A (1.3) and the M16A (1.6) — and DDiS diesel units, which in fact comprise four separate families born from PSA-GM co-development programmes. The same label "1.3 DDiS" does not guarantee the same block: the code Y13DT (1.3 DDiS) and the K9K_700 (1.5 DDiS) are two different bare engines, fitted to different models depending on the year.

Diesel DDiS: four codes, four origins

Suzuki DDiS engines are co-developed or externally sourced units, which accounts for the variety of codes. The F9Q powers the 1.9 DDiS (Swift and Grand Vitara), the DW10ATED4_RHW the 2.0 DDiS (Grand Vitara), the K9K_700 the 1.5 DDiS (Swift), and the Y13DT the 1.3 DDiS. A common pitfall: a diesel Jimny or Vitara may correspond to different codes depending on the year of first registration. Reliable identification requires the engine code stamped on the block itself — not just the engine capacity shown in the vehicle's documents.

Petrol VVT: two closely related units, two different applications

The petrol units in the range — M13A (1.3 VVT) and M16A (1.6 VVT) — share a common variable camshaft timing architecture but are not interchangeable. The M13A is found primarily on the Swift and Jimny in the earlier years of the period covered; the M16A steps up in engine capacity on later versions. The reconditioned engines available here are sold on an exchange basis as bare engines.
