The story of the 1.5 CRDi at Hyundai-Kia revolves around two clearly distinct engine code families: the D4FA and the D4FB. The D4FA is the core reference within this range: it covers all the power outputs documented here, from 88 hp to 110 hp, including the VGT 110 variant. The D4FB, on the other hand, appears only under the generic 1.5 CRDi engine designation. On a 1.5 CRDi, the turbo suffers primarily from insufficient lubrication — caused by degraded oil, overdue service intervals, or a delayed cold start. The typical symptoms are blue smoke from the exhaust, an unusual whistling noise from the turbo, or a noticeable loss of acceleration with no other identifiable mechanical cause. A blocked intake circuit or a sealing failure (hose gaskets, clips) can also lead to a drop in boost pressure. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and correct the root cause to avoid compromising the new part.
