Signs of a failing turbo on the Kia Rio 1.5 CRDi

On the Kia Rio fitted with the 1.5 CRDi engine (code D4FA), a turbo nearing the end of its life often shows itself through a noticeable loss of power under acceleration, an unusual whistling noise from the engine bay, persistent blue or black exhaust smoke, and sometimes an illuminated engine warning light accompanied by a boost fault code. Excessive oil consumption or rough idling can also point to worn bearings or excessive play in the turbo's variable geometry.

Fitting advice for the Rio 1.5 CRDi

Before installation, check the oil circuit (hoses, feed and return lines), the air intake and the condition of the air filter, as well as the intercooler, which is often responsible for premature wear if it becomes blocked. An oil change using a suitable quality oil reduces the risk of damage caused by insufficient lubrication. On first start-up, priming the turbo with oil is recommended to ensure immediate lubrication of the bearings before the engine is brought up to speed.

  • Check the cleanliness of the oil circuit before fitting
  • Inspect the hoses and air intake
  • Carry out an oil change using a suitable quality oil
  • Prime the turbo with oil on first start-up
  • Drive gently after installation

Payment for your order can be spread over several instalments, in up to 10 instalments, to make purchasing this new turbo for the Kia Rio 1.5 CRDi more manageable.
