Kia Gearboxes, Engines and Turbos: Before and After the Engine Code, Two Parts That Cannot Be Swapped

The most common pitfall with Kia vehicles comes down to a single misread digit. A 1.6 CRDi can come fitted with either a D4FB or a D4FE block depending on the model and production period; a 2.0 CRDi spans engine codes D4EA and D4HA depending on the generation of the Sportage or Sorento. These codes share neither the same internal dimensions nor the same gearbox mounting points: mixing one up with the other means ordering an incompatible part, even when the engine capacity is identical. The first step is therefore to read the engine code stamped on the block before searching for anything.

Diesel, Petrol, V6: Three Ranges, Three Distinct Characteristics

The range covers Kia vehicles from 2001 to 2023. On the diesel side, CRDi blocks are the most common: D4FB / D4FC on the 1.4 CRDi 75, 78 and 90 hp (Rio, Venga, Picanto), D4FD on the 1.7 CRDi 116 and 136 hp (Ceed, Carens), D4CB on the 2.5 CRDi 140 and 170 hp (Sorento, Carnival), D4HB on the 2.2 CRDi (Sportage, Sorento). On the petrol side, the 1.0 T-GDI carries engine codes G3LC, G3LE or G3LF depending on output and year — three distinct variants that a single commercial name can conceal. The petrol V6s (3.0 and 3.3) carry codes G6DE, G6DG, G6DB or G6DF depending on the exact engine capacity and the generation of the Sorento or Carnival.

Sportage and Sorento Lead the Way, Turbos in High Demand

The Sportage is the best-represented model, followed by the Sorento. These two SUVs account for the bulk of the 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes, as well as the transfer case available on 4-wheel drive versions. Turbos are the most in-demand part family across all engine types — the 1.7 CRDi and 2.0 CRDi are particularly prone to oil circuit fouling, a frequent cause of premature failure. Bare engines are available on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of the customer's own unit, depending on the reference. For each model, visit the dedicated page with your engine code to hand: it is the engine code, not the stated engine capacity, that determines the exact part required.

    Frequently asked questions

Are your Kia parts compatible with my model?

We cover the vast majority of Kia engines. To get the exact part, give us your number plate or request an online quote: our advisers confirm compatibility using your registration document.

    Are reconditioned Kia parts reliable?

Yes. Every Kia part is reconditioned in our workshop, with wear parts replaced, bench-tested and guaranteed for up to 24 months. A reliable and far more affordable alternative to new, starting from a restored original part.

How does the exchange system work for a Kia part?

You order your reconditioned Kia part, we dispatch it, then you send us back your old unit (the core). We arrange all the transport both ways — you don't have to handle any logistics.

Do you deliver Kia parts everywhere, and how quickly?

Yes, we deliver throughout France and Europe. Depending on the availability of the reference, your Kia part leaves our workshop quickly, and you can pay in instalments, up to 10 payments.
