On Kia diesels, the turbo and gearbox give out before the engine does

This is a recurring pattern on Kia CRDi models from 2001–2023: the D4FB, D4FD and D4HA blocks frequently last several hundred thousand kilometres, while the turbo and gearbox show signs of wear far sooner. On the 1.6 CRDi (D4FB) fitted to the Sportage, Ceed and Venga, a gradual loss of power and blue smoke on start-up are tell-tale signs of a turbo nearing the end of its life. On the 1.7 CRDi (D4FD, D4FDL, D4FE) in the Ceed and Carens, rattling under acceleration points to a variable-geometry fault. These symptoms call for prompt replacement: a failed turbo left unchanged will inevitably damage the engine block.

Gearboxes: the identification pitfalls by model and engine

The Sportage and Sorento alone account for the majority of referenced gearboxes, yet the same engine designation can correspond to different gearboxes depending on the generation and drivetrain. The 2.0 CRDi was fitted over the years with either the D4EA or D4HA engine codes, which are not compatible with the same gearboxes. On the 2.2 CRDi (D4HB) in the Sorento, the 6-speed manual gearbox is prone to difficult gear changes when cold, a sign of synchromesh wear. The 1.4 CRDi comes in three power outputs (75, 78 and 90 hp) with engine codes D4FB or D4FC: always check the engine code stamped on the block before placing an order, as the internal dimensions differ.

Petrol T-GDI and V6: engines and turbos to watch

On the petrol side, the 1.0 T-GDI (G3LC, G3LE) in the Stonic and Rio is known for abnormal oil consumption on certain production runs, an early indicator of premature piston ring wear. The 2.0 GDI Turbo (Theta 2 family) in the generation III Sportage has a history of engine failure linked to lubrication issues: replacement with a reconditioned bare engine is often the only viable solution. The V6 3.0 (G6DE, G6DG) and 3.3 (G6DB, G6DF) units from the Carnival and Sorento are less common but are included in the range. For both petrol and diesel turbos, EDEN BOITES stocks new and reconditioned parts depending on the reference.
