On the Ford 2.2 TDCi, the engine code is the only reliable reference point: the same power output can correspond to turbo references that have nothing in common with one another.

The 2.2 TDCi covers a power range running from 85 hp to 155 hp depending on the application, and the catalogue lists more than 40 distinct engine codes spread across several entries. The pitfall is real: two vehicles showing the same power output — 110 hp or 115 hp, for example — may carry different engine codes and require different manufacturer references. Conversely, the same code can appear in several power entries within the catalogue, which means it is not possible to determine the turbo reference from the stated power output alone.The engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point.

Three main code families in the catalogue, covering very different vehicles

The catalogue distinguishes several code groupings. The codes CYF4, CYFA to CYFF, DRF4, DRFA to DRFF, ENPF, ENQJ, ENQW, GBVAJPF, GBVAJQJ, GBVAJQW, CVFF and P4AT appear under the generic 2.2 TDCi entry, which relates primarily to the Ford Transit and Ford Tourneo. The codes P8FA, P8FB, PGFA, PGFB, QVFA, SRFA to SRFE, UHFA to UHFC cover the 85, 110, 115 and 140 hp outputs, found notably on the Ford Ranger. The Land Rover Defender 2.2 TDCi uses the codes DRRA, GBVAJQJ and QJ2R. Finally, the Ford Puma has its own code,DT224, listed separately under the 2.2 TDCi (Puma) entry: there is no risk of confusion with the other groupings. Codes such as CVRA, CVRB, CVRC, CVR5, UHR5 and USRA appear only in the broadest multi-power entry, which confirms that searching by power output alone is not sufficient.

Causes of failure and precautions before replacement

On this diesel engine, turbo failures most commonly present as abnormal whistling, white or grey exhaust smoke, a gradual loss of performance, or the vehicle entering limp-home mode.
