Which turbo for a Ford Transit diesel: how to get the right reference?

The answer depends above all on the engine code stamped on your block, not the engine capacity shown on the registration document. Two Transits with a 2.2 TDCi or 2.0 EcoBlue of the same stated output can take turbos with entirely different manufacturer references depending on the generation and the exact engine code.

One Transit, dozens of engines: the families you need to tell apart

The Transit spans several decades of production and three main families of diesel blocks. The oldest are based on 2.5 TD, 2.5 TDI and 2.5 DI (codes 4EA, 4EB, 4EC, 4ED, 4GA to 4HD) with fixed-geometry turbos and a wastegate. These are followed by the intermediate generations with the 2.0 Di and 2.0 TDCi (codes F3FA, D3FA, ABFA, FIFA among others), the 2.4 Di and 2.4 TDE (D2FA, D2FB, D2FE, D4FA, DOFA, FXFA), the 2.4 TDCi in 100, 115 and 140 hp versions (JXFA, JXFC, PHFA, PHFC, H9FB, H9FD), the 3.2 TDCi 200 hp (SAFA) and the 1.8 TDCi 90 (HCPA to P9PA). The current generation is built around the 2.2 TDCi — the widest in terms of power outputs, from 85 to 155 hp, with around twenty distinct engine codes (CVFF, CVRA, CVRB, CVRC, CYFA to CYFD, DRFA to DRFE, P8FA, P8FB, PGFA, PGFB, SRFA to SRFE, UHFA to UHFC, UHR5, USRA) — and the 2.0 EcoBlue in its standard and mild-hybrid (mHEV) variants, from 105 to 170 hp (BCFA to BCFD, BCRA, BCRB, BJFA to BJFD, BKFA to BKFD, BLFA to BLFD, YLFA, YLFB, YLFS, YMFA, YMFB, YMFS, YNFA, YNFB, YNFS, N0HA).

Identification pitfalls and common causes of failure

On the 2.2 TDCi in particular, the same power output can correspond to several engine codes whose turbos do not share the same manufacturer reference. The engine code — visible on the block itself — remains the only reliable criterion for selecting the correct reference. On the 2.0 EcoBlue, the mHEV variant involves additional specifications: check whether this designation is present before placing any order. As for failures, Transits are commercial vehicles that are often heavily loaded and subjected to short urban and site-work cycles that are unfavourable to oil reaching operating temperature: oil circuit contamination and lubricant degradation are the primary causes of turbo bearing wear, manifesting as a whistling noise at mid-range revs, blue smoke under acceleration, or the vehicle entering limp-home mode. A blocked EGR circuit or diesel particulate filter can also cause excess pressure on the intake side. Before any replacement, it is essential to address the root cause in order to avoid another premature failure. All turbos listed here are new turbos, sold with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Ford Transit Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Ford Transit Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
