Ford Galaxy Turbo: from the Volkswagen 1.9 TDI to the 2.0 EcoBoost – two opposing forced-induction philosophies

The Galaxy spans several generations with a very clear split: the majority of the engines available here are diesel, ranging from the Volkswagen-derived 1.9 TDI (90, 115, 130 and 150 hp) to Ford's TDCi units in 1.8 and 2.0, while the petrol range is limited to the 2.0 EcoBoost 240 hp and the 2.5 T 225 hp. This split is not incidental: it directly determines the type of turbo you need. The diesel units work almost exclusively with variable-geometry turbos (movable vanes controlled by an actuator), which are highly sensitive to vane fouling and engine oil quality. The two petrol engines, by contrast, use fixed-geometry turbos with a wastegate, less prone to fouling but more exposed to the thermal stresses associated with high engine speeds.

1.9 TDI and TDCi diesel: identifying the engine code precisely first

The 1.9 TDI engines fitted to the Galaxy share their architecture with Volkswagen Group units: engine codes ANU (90 hp), AUY (115 hp), ASZ and BTB (130 and 150 hp) correspond to distinct turbo references — confusing them leads to connection or geometry incompatibility. The move to Ford TDCi units introduces further fragmentation: the 1.8 TDCi (codes FFWA, QYWA, CDLYNX) and the 2.0 TDCi (codes AZWA, AZWC, KLWA, QXWA, QXWB, QXWC, TYWA, UKWA) cover power outputs from 100 to 140 hp, each engine code/power combination having its own specific turbo reference. On the 2.0 TDCi in particular, several chassis variants and production years coexist with variable-geometry units of differing kinematics: the reliable reference point remains the engine code stamped on the block, cross-referenced with the manufacturer's original turbo reference.

2.0 EcoBoost and 2.5 T petrol: wastegate turbos and specific thermal constraints

The 2.0 EcoBoost 240 hp (codes R9CD, R9CI, TPWA) and the 2.5 T 225 hp (code RNC2P25-LT) use fixed-geometry turbos regulated by a wastegate. Their main weakness is not vane fouling but bearing and seal failure caused by rapid temperature spikes, which are common in a vehicle of the Galaxy's size when driven under load. Typical symptoms include whistling, blue smoke and a noticeable loss of power. On these petrol engines, identifying the engine code precisely remains essential: the three 2.0 EcoBoost codes do not necessarily share the same turbo reference. All turbos listed on this page are new turbos, sold with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Ford Galaxy Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Ford Galaxy Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
