On the Ford 2.0 TDCi, each vehicle generation received a distinct turbo family

The 2.0 TDCi covers a wide range: from 90 hp to 163 hp, spread across several generations of the Mondeo, Kuga, Galaxy, S-Max and Transit. What stands out when examining the engine codes is the discontinuity: codes D5BA, D6BA, HJBA, HJBB, HJBC, SDBA correspond to the 90 and 115 hp versions, whilst codes FIFA, FMBA, FMBB, N7BA are found on the 115 and 130 hp versions — with D6BA, HJBA, HJBB and HJBC appearing in both groups, a clear sign that output alone is not enough to identify the correct reference. Another family, grouping codes such as AZB, AZWA, AZWC, DW10BTED, DW10BTED4, KLBA, KLWA, LPBA, QXB, QXWA, QXWB, QXWC, TYWA, UFBA, UKWA, covers the 115 to 140 hp versions across an even wider range of vehicles. Finally, codes G6DB, G6DG, UKDA and TXWA relate to the 136, 140 and 163 hp variants. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable starting point.

Why the manufacturer reference is critical across this range

The reference examples in this collection illustrate the sheer number of Ford part numbers (format 1S7Q-6K682-xx, 4S7Q-6K682-xx, 3M5Q-6K682-xx, 9M5Q-6K682-xx…) reflecting successive nomenclature changes across model generations. The same commercial designation — "2.0 TDCi 115 hp" — can therefore correspond to different manufacturer references depending on the model (Mondeo, Transit, Galaxy) and the production period. Equivalent references allow older or discontinued part numbers to be covered, but they apply only to the exact original reference of the vehicle in question. All turbos offered here are brand-new turbos, sold with no old unit to return.

Causes of failure and key checks before replacement

On high-demand diesels such as the Transit or Mondeo in intensive use, the most common causes of failure remain insufficient lubrication (degraded oil or too long a delay before pressurisation from cold), contamination caused by a faulty diesel particulate filter or EGR, and air leaks upstream of the compressor. The classic symptoms — blue or black smoke, whistling, a marked loss of power, limp-home mode — may point to the turbo, but can equally indicate an upstream cause that has not been addressed. Fitting a new turbo without identifying and rectifying the root cause will invariably lead to another rapid failure. Checking the lubrication circuit and the intake line is an essential part of any preliminary diagnosis.
