The Ranger went through three different diesel engines: turbos are not interchangeable between generations

The Ranger's mechanical history spans several clearly distinct generations. The first major technical break came with the switch from the 2.5 TD (engine codes J97A, WL-T, WLT) to the 2.8 Power Stroke (engine codes HS2.8 and HS2.8 HT): two entirely unrelated architectures, two turbo families with no shared references. The second break is even more significant, with the arrival of the modern Ranger fitted with the 2.2 TDCi and later the 3.2 TDCi, which introduced Ford chain-driven engines and variable-geometry turbos with an electronic actuator — technology entirely absent from earlier generations.

2.2 TDCi and 3.2 TDCi: different power outputs, different references

On the 2.2 TDCi, the distinction between 125 hp (engine codes DRRA, QJ2R, GBVAJQJ) and 150 hp (engine codes ENPF, ENQJ, ENQW, GBVAJPF, GBVAJQJ, GBVAJQW) is critical: same engine capacity, but turbo references differ depending on the power output. The 3.2 TDCi (engine codes ENSA, P5-AT, SA2R, SA2S, SA2W, SAFA) uses a five-cylinder-specific turbo that is incompatible with the four-cylinder 2.2. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable means of identification to avoid any reference errors.

Failure causes and points to watch during fitting

On the 2.5 TD and 2.8 Power Stroke, fixed-geometry turbos with a wastegate are susceptible to engine oil degradation, which is common on vehicles used in demanding conditions (off-road, heavy loads, extreme temperatures). On TDCi-generation engines, the variable-geometry turbo actuator is a distinct weak point, separate from the turbo core itself: a persistent whistling noise or a clear loss of power without smoke points to the actuator rather than the CHRA. In all cases, identifying and rectifying the root cause of the failure — oil contamination, an air leak on the intake circuit, bearings worn through insufficient oil pressure — is what determines the service life of the new turbo. All turbos in this collection are new parts, sold with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Ford Ranger Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Ford Ranger Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
