From the 2.2 TDCi to the 2.0 EcoBlue: three generations of diesel under the Ranger's bonnet since 2011

The Ford Ranger, on sale since 2011, has been fitted with three successive diesel engines, with no petrol option in the range: the 3.2 TDCi five-cylinder, the 2.2 TDCi four-cylinder, and, on more recent versions, the 2.0 EcoBlue. These three engines share no architecture, no engine code family, and no internal components. A Ranger 2.2 and a Ranger 3.2 from the same model year are two entirely different engines; a Ranger 3.2 and a Ranger 2.0 EcoBlue even more so. Engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the exact unit: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference.

3.2 TDCi and 2.2 TDCi: the Ranger's original engine generation

The 3.2 TDCi covers seven distinct codes — 5FSP, 5FSS, ENSA, SA2R, SA2S, SA2W, SAFA — corresponding to different homologation stages, markets, or emissions standards. These codes are not interchangeable when replacing the engine. The 2.2 TDCi covers three codes: QJ2R, QJ2S, QJ2W. A pickup used for heavy loads, frequent towing, or off-road driving places particular thermal demands on these engines; piston ring wear and liner fatigue are well-known areas to monitor on engines subjected to sustained high loads.

2.0 EcoBlue: a more recent architecture — two codes not to be confused

The 2.0 EcoBlue introduces a different architecture from the two previous engines. Two codes exist for this unit: BC2X and YN2X. These two codes do not refer to the same engine and cannot be substituted for one another. Before placing any order, locating the code stamped on the block — rather than relying solely on the commercial name 'EcoBlue' — is essential to ensure compatibility.
