On the Ford Ranger, the same 2.2 TDCi designation covers several mutually incompatible engine codes

The first instinct — going by engine capacity — is precisely what leads to ordering the wrong part. The Ranger produced between 2011 and 2025 comes with three diesel engines (2.2 TDCi, 3.2 TDCi and 2.0 EcoBlue), but each one spans several distinct engine codes. The 2.2 TDCi alone covers codes such as SAFA, SA2R, SA2W, SA2S or ENSA, which correspond to different internal architectures depending on the vehicle generation and power output. The same applies to the 3.2 TDCi, with codes QJ2R, QJ2W, QJ2S or BC2X. Only the engine code stamped on the block — not the capacity, nor the year alone — will ensure you order the correct part.

What changes with the switch to the 2.0 EcoBlue

From the facelift of the P703 generation (around 2019–2020), Ford dropped the five-cylinder 3.2 and the four-cylinder 2.2 in favour of the 2.0 EcoBlue bi-turbo (codes 5FSS, 5FSP), a structurally different, more compact block with a completely redesigned cylinder head. This engine shares no parts whatsoever with its predecessors: any mix-up between generations will make fitting impossible.

Key points to watch by engine family

The 3.2 TDCi five-cylinder is well regarded for its durability at high mileage, but crankshaft seal and oil pump issues are well documented on units subjected to heavy towing or intensive off-road use. The 2.2 TDCi has known cases of premature piston ring wear on high-load variants. In both cases, the engine is supplied as a bare engine: ancillaries (turbo, alternator, starter motor, injection pump) are not included and must be reused or replaced separately depending on their condition.
