The Ranger has gone through three families of diesel turbos over thirty years of production

The Ford Ranger has not had a single turbo, but several generations of diesel engines with very different architectures. The oldest unit featured here is the 2.8 Power Stroke (codes HS2.8 and HS2.8 HT), an engine fitted to Rangers from the pre-2000 generation, producing 128 to 130 hp. Next comes the 2.5 TD 109 (codes J97A, WL-T, WLT), developed in cooperation with Mazda and identifiable by its highly specific turbo references WL85 and XM34. These two older families share no interchangeable parts with later generations.

2.2 and 3.2 TDCi: two distinct engines, same Ranger generation

The Ranger T6 generation (from 2011 onwards) introduced two new diesel engines: the 2.2 TDCi (codes ENPF, ENQJ, ENQW, GBVAJPF, GBVAJQJ, GBVAJQW) and the 3.2 TDCi (codes ENSA, P5-AT, SA2R, SA2S, SA2W, SAFA). Both engines are available on the same model but have nothing in common on the turbo side: the 3.2 TDCi uses variable-geometry turbos with references BK3Q and FB3Q depending on the sub-variant, while the 2.2 TDCi has its own distinct BK3Q references. Confusion is common here: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to confirm you have the correct turbo, as engine capacity and stated power output alone are not enough to distinguish between sub-variants of the 3.2.

Common failure causes on these commercial-use engines

The Ranger is frequently used in demanding conditions: heavy loads, off-road tracks, and prolonged idling. These uses place particular strain on the turbo's bearings and seals. On the 2.5 TD and 2.8 Power Stroke, gradual sludge build-up in the oil feed circuit is a common cause of bearing failure. On the TDCi engines, fouling from the EGR or DPF can degrade the variable geometry and lead to whistling, smoke under acceleration, or the engine entering limp mode. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and address the root cause — engine oil quality and cleanliness, condition of the intake circuit — to avoid damaging the replacement part. All turbos listed on this page are new parts sold direct.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Ford Ranger Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Ford Ranger Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
