Ford Mondeo Turbo: from the first-generation 2.0 TDCi to the 2.0 EcoBoost – why the same 2.0 doesn't take the same turbo

On the Mondeo, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct reference. The 2.0 diesel is a perfect illustration of this trap: between engine codes D5BA, D6BA, HJBA, HJBB, HJBC (2.0 TDCi 90 and 115 hp) and codes AZB, DW10BTED, DW10BTED4, KLBA, LPBA, QXB, UFBA (2.0 TDCi 115 to 140 hp), you are dealing with engine blocks of different origins — including a PSA family fitted under a joint venture — which require turbos that are in no way interchangeable. The engine code stamped on the block is therefore the only reliable starting point, before even looking at power output or year of manufacture.

Diesel: four 2.0 families, one 1.8, each with its own variable geometry

The 2.0 TDCi units from the early Mondeo generations — codes D6BA, FIFA, FMBA, FMBB, N7BA for the 115 and 130 hp versions, or SDBA for the 90 hp — share certain codes across several power outputs, meaning the same block can be paired with different engine maps. The variable geometry on these turbos is sensitive to clogging, particularly caused by delayed oil changes or a heavily sooted EGR circuit: gradual power loss and limp-home mode are the first warning signs. The 1.8 TDCi (codes KHBA, QYBA, 100 and 125 hp) takes a turbo specific to its engine capacity, with no commonality with the 2.0 units. On these diesel engines, persistent blue or black smoke combined with an abnormal whistling noise points towards bearing failure or an oil-side seal failure.

Petrol: 1.5 EcoBoost and 2.0 EcoBoost – engine codes must be checked

The 2.0 EcoBoost comes in two distinct groups of codes: TNCA, TNCB, TNCD, TNCF for the 203 hp version only, and TNBA, TPBA for the variant covering 203 and 240 hp — two different turbos despite identical capacity and name. The 1.5 EcoBoost (codes UNCA, UNCB, UNCE, UNCF, UNCN) corresponds to a turbo specific to that block. On EcoBoost engines, the most common cause of turbo failure remains lubrication breakdown at cold start or after the engine is switched off immediately from high revs; allowing the engine to cool down before switching off reduces this risk. All turbos listed on this page are new units, sold without part exchange.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Ford Mondeo Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Ford Mondeo Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
