7 Ford Focus engine variants, two radically different turbo philosophies

On the Ford Focus, turbos are spread across six diesel engines — 1.8 TDDi 90, 1.8 TDCi 100/115, 1.6 TDCi in three power outputs — and three petrol engines — 1.6 EcoBoost 150/182, 2.0 EcoBoost SCTi and 2.0 EcoBoost ST. This split is significant: on the diesel side, variable-geometry turbos dominate, with movable vanes exposed to soot deposits from exhaust gas recirculation; on the EcoBoost petrol side, turbos operate at considerably higher outlet temperatures, with pronounced thermal stress on the bearings and CHRA — particularly on the high-performance ST and 182 hp variants.

The engine code: the only reliable starting point for identifying the correct turbo

The same engine capacity can take several different turbo references depending on the engine code stamped on the engine plate. The 1.8 TDCi 115 is a perfect example: codes F9DA, F9DB, FFDA (1.8 TDCi 100/115) and KKDA, KKDB (1.8 TDCi 115) correspond to different turbos despite appearing to share the same power output. Likewise, the 1.6 TDCi covers seven codes — G8DA, G8DB, G8DD, G8DF, HHDA, T1DA, T1DB — and the 1.6 EcoBoost five codes — JQDA, JQDB, JTDA, JTDB, YUDA. Mixing up two codes within the same family risks a mismatch in flange, actuator connector or geometry.

New or reconditioned: exchange basis available for one engine variant only

Almost all engine variants on this page are covered by new turbos, sold with no old unit to return. Only the 1.8 TDDi 90 (codes C9DA, C9DB, C9DC) is available as a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis. Before any replacement, regardless of the engine variant, it is essential to identify and eliminate the root cause of the failure — oil circuit contamination, a blown turbo seal, or a foreign body in the intake — otherwise the new or reconditioned turbo is likely to fail within the first few hours of running. Common symptoms on the Focus include a whistling noise under acceleration, persistent grey smoke, and a loss of boost pressure detected when reading the engine data.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Ford Focus Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Ford Focus Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
