10 engine variants over 17 years: what daily use of the Focus reveals about its gearboxes

The Ford Focus is above all a versatile family hatchback, used intensively in urban and suburban environments: short journeys, frequent clutch use, and repetitive gear changes. This pattern of use places sustained demands on the gearbox internals, particularly on high-torque versions such as the 2.5 Turbo (ST 225 hp, code HYDA, and RS/RS500, code JZDA), whose 6-speed manual endures stresses far greater than those of a 1.0. At the other end of the range, the 1.0 EcoBoost (codes M1DA, M2DA) and the 1.6 TDCi (codes G8DA, G8DB, G8DC, GPDA, T1DA, T3DA), the most common in the fleet, show more gradual wear but generate high replacement volumes simply because of how widely they were sold. Across the entire Focus range from 2004 to 2021, the collection covers 10 distinct engine variants, all fitted with manual gearboxes — 5-speed for the 1.4 TDCi (code KVJA) and the 1.8 (codes CSDA, CSDB, QQDA, QQDB), and 6-speed for all other engine variants.

Identifying the correct gearbox for your engine

An engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the right gearbox. The 1.0 naturally aspirated (codes B7DA, SFDB, and also M1DA and M2DA shared with the EcoBoost) takes a 6-speed manual that differs from the 1.0 EcoBoost unit despite sharing engine codes: this is a common source of confusion and leads to ordering an incompatible part. The 1.5 TDCi comes in five engine codes (XWDA to XWDE), and gearbox references may vary between them; the 2.0 EcoBoost (R9DA, R9DC) and the 2.3 EcoBoost (YVDA) share the same family of 6-speed gearbox but remain two distinct engine variants. The 1.6 petrol naturally aspirated (HWDA, HXDA, PNBA, PNDA) must not be confused with the 1.6 TDCi despite having the same engine capacity. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable criterion for selecting the exact reference.

Common symptoms and points to watch

On Focus models used intensively in urban conditions, the most frequent symptoms are stiff or imprecise gear changes, bearing noise when cold, and oil leaks from the gearbox input shaft seal. On ST and RS versions, synchromesh wear — particularly on 2nd and 3rd gear — is a well-documented issue linked to engine torque and repeated high-rev driving. Two purchasing options are available depending on the condition of the original unit: if it is too badly worn to serve as a core, an exchange gearbox is the right solution; if it is salvageable, having your own gearbox rebuilt allows you to retain the vehicle's original unit.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Ford model in stock?

We currently list 24 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Ford?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Ford?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
