Ford Connect: three diesel engines, twelve engine codes, sixteen years of evolution

Between 2002 and 2018, the Transit Connect diesel spanned two generations and saw its gearbox range change considerably. The early models were built around the 1.8 TDCi, paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox. From the second generation onwards, Ford introduced the 1.6 TDCi and then the 1.5 TDCi, the latter available with either a 5- or 6-speed gearbox depending on the year and trim level. This generational shift represents a genuine break in available parts: the gearboxes fitted to the 1.8 and those fitted to the 1.5 or 1.6 do not share the same mechanical family.

Twelve engine codes to identify the right gearbox

The same engine capacity listed in the catalogue can correspond to different power outputs (75, 90, 95 or 115 hp depending on the 1.5 TDCi variant) and therefore to different gearbox ratios. Checking the engine code before placing any order prevents a mismatching error, particularly on later versions of the 1.5 TDCi where references FV6R-7002 and DV6R-7002 coexist depending on the power output.

Key points to watch for by engine

The 1.8 TDCi (codes XVGA, XWGA, XUGA) is the first-generation engine, fitted with a specific 5-speed gearbox referenced around 7T1R-7002 or 2T1R-7002. This unit is known for accelerated synchromesh wear on the lower gears, a common symptom on vehicles used in urban environments with regular loads. On the 1.5 TDCi, whether a 5- or 6-speed gearbox is fitted depends strictly on the model year and power output: codes TZGA and T1GA do not call for the same unit as RWPA or R3PA. The 1.6 TDCi (codes P9PA, P9PB) is fitted with the 6-speed only.
