Three diesel engines across sixteen years of Transit Connect: what this means for the gearbox

From 2002 to 2018, the Transit Connect spanned two generations and received three successive diesel engines: the 1.8 TDCi covers the first period, while the 1.6 TDCi and the 1.5 TDCi take over on the second generation. This chronological split has a direct impact on the transmission: each engine corresponds to a distinct gearbox family, and parts are not interchangeable between generations.

1.8 TDCi: five engine codes, a single 5-speed gearbox

On the first generation, the 1.8 TDCi is available under the codes P9PA, P9PB, R2PA, R3PA and RWPA. All are fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The key is to check the exact code stamped on the engine: internal ratios can differ depending on the model year, making the code essential for ordering the correct gearbox reference.

1.6 TDCi and 1.5 TDCi: the 6-speed is standard, with a nuance on the 1.5

The 1.6 TDCi (codes T1GA, TZGA, UBGA, UBJA) is always paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 1.5 TDCi (codes XUGA, XVGA, XWGA) covers both types: 5-speed manual or 6-speed manual depending on the year and version. A Connect fitted with the 1.5 TDCi may therefore take either; only the engine code matched to the original gearbox reference will resolve any ambiguity before placing an order.
