Three engine families, twelve engine codes: what the Kuga SUV demands of its manual gearbox

The Ford Kuga is a compact SUV built for versatility: heavy urban traffic, loaded motorway runs, and the occasional light tow. This usage profile puts very different demands on the gearbox compared with a saloon: frequent gear changes in town, repeated pull-aways on the road, and a payload that often approaches the maximum permitted weight all accelerate wear on the synchromesh rings and shaft bearings. Across the 2008–2019 generation, every engine in the range is paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox, yet the physical units differ depending on the engine and the year of first registration.

Diesel: 2.0 TDCi and 1.5 TDCi – different gearboxes despite the same name

The 2.0 TDCi spans six engine codes — G6DG, T7MA, T7MB, TXDA, UFDA, UFWA — spread across several model years between 2008 and 2019. Gearbox references vary from one code to the next; mixing up the codes risks a fitment incompatibility. The 1.5 TDCi, which arrived later in the range, covers codes XWMA and XWMB and uses its own variant of the 6-speed manual, which is not interchangeable with the 2.0 TDCi unit. On both diesel engines, the most common signs of wear are difficulty engaging first gear or reverse, and a dull rumble associated with the primary shaft bearings.

Petrol: the 1.6 EcoBoost and its four engine codes

The petrol version of the Kuga is built around the 1.6 EcoBoost, available in four engine codes: JQMA, JQMB, JTMA, JTMB. This turbocharged engine delivers a different torque output from the diesels, which is why the gearbox has its own gear ratios and internal dimensions to match. Identifying the engine code — stamped on the block or listed on the vehicle registration document — is essential here when selecting the correct unit: engine capacity and commercial name alone are not enough to distinguish between references.
