Ford Ranger diesel: 4 TDCi engines, two families of manual gearboxes that don't overlap

On the Ranger produced between 2006 and 2019, the transmission is exclusively manual — no automatic, no dual-clutch in this range. But the similarity ends there: the 2.5 TDCi comes with a 5-speed gearbox, whilst the three other engines — 2.2, 3.2 and 2.0 TDCi — all use a 6-speed gearbox. These two families are not interchangeable, even where engine capacity is similar. Identifying the right one therefore starts with the engine, not the number of gears shown on the registration document.

How the engine affects your choice of gearbox

The five-cylinder 3.2 TDCi is the most powerful engine in the range; its 6-speed gearbox is built to handle a significantly higher torque than that of the 2.2. Both share the same number of ratios, but their internal design differs. The 2.0 TDCi, introduced on the most recent model years, also uses a 6-speed, but with its own references: YN2S, YN2X, QJ2R, SA2W, SA2X and WLAA are the six engine codes referenced within this scope, and each one determines the exact gearbox reference. Examples such as MT82 or JB3R-7003-KA alone illustrate the variety of designations depending on the generation and engine.

Pick-up use and transmission demands

The Ranger is a multi-purpose pick-up — professional use, towing, off-road — and its gearbox is subjected to stresses that a saloon car never encounters: lower gears used under load, high torque transmission off-road, repeated manoeuvres with a trailer attached. Gearboxes on the 3.2 TDCi versions are known to suffer accelerated synchromesh wear under heavy towing use — a well-documented weakness on this generation. Two reconditioning options are available depending on your situation: exchange or rebuilding your own unit, the latter being particularly suited when the gearbox already carries specific modifications or accessories fitted to the vehicle.
