Ford B-Max Gearbox: from 2012 to 2017, a single transmission type across three engines to tell apart

Throughout the entire production run of the B-Max, Ford never offered an automatic gearbox or dual-clutch transmission in this range: whether petrol or diesel, the vehicle was fitted exclusively with a 5-speed manual. This simplifies the choice of part, but does not remove the identification pitfall: three engines were available side by side (1.0 EcoBoost, 1.5 TDCi, 1.6 TDCi), and their respective gearboxes are not interchangeable, even though they share the same number of ratios.

Engine codes: the real key to identification

The 1.0 EcoBoost accounts for the bulk of vehicles on the road, with four gearbox variants on record, compared with two for the 1.5 TDCi and one for the 1.6 TDCi. The engine codes covered by this range are XVJC, T1JA, T3JB, SFJA, M1JA and M1JE. It is this code, stamped on the engine itself, that allows you to cross-reference the correct gearbox — references such as ET7R-7002-ABE or DV1R-7002-CBB each identify a specific configuration, and mixing up petrol and diesel engines will invariably result in an incompatible part.

Two service options available

The gearboxes in this range are available on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of your own unit. In the latter case, your original gearbox is reconditioned and returned to you — a worthwhile option when the exact reference is difficult to source, or when the gearbox shows localised wear rather than complete failure.
