Transit 2000–2023: twenty years of gearboxes under extreme load and mileage demands

A van that takes on heavy loads, loaded hill starts and long-distance runs every day puts its gearbox through a very different kind of punishment than a saloon car. On the Transit, this has meant gearboxes subjected to significant torque stress from the earliest diesel generations, combined with a wide range of configurations that makes identifying the correct part particularly tricky. Nine engine variants cover the 2000–2023 period, with forty distinct engine codes — engine capacity alone is never enough to determine the right gearbox.

Two technical eras, two gearbox philosophies

Up to around 2006, the Transit relied primarily on the 2.0 TDCi (code ABFA) and the 2.4 TDCi (codes PHFA, PHFB, JXFA), along with the 2.5 TDCi with six engine codes (4EA, 4EB, 4EC, 4FA, 4GA, 4GB) and the 1.8 TDCi with eight codes. These units were fitted exclusively with 5-speed manual gearboxes, with the exception of certain 2.4 TDCi variants which moved to a 6-speed. Following the model range renewal, the 2.2 TDCi became the core engine with eleven codes (CVRA, DRFA, DRFB, DRFC, DRFD, DRFE, DRFF, P8FA, QVFA, SRFA, UFFA), covering both gearbox types — 5-speed and 6-speed — depending on the engine code and vehicle configuration. The 3.2 TDCi (code SAFA), reserved for the heavier-duty versions, was fitted exclusively with the 6-speed.

More recent engines and the interchangeable capacity trap

Since 2016, the Transit has featured newer engine units: the 2.0 EcoBlue (no engine code published in the file) and the 1.5 TDCi (codes XVGA, XWCA, XWDA, XWGA), fitted to the compact panel van versions. These units receive either a 6-speed or 5-speed gearbox depending on the exact variant. The 1.0 EcoBoost (codes SFCA to SFCF), a petrol engine found on the Courier and Connect versions associated with the Transit range, is paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual. On a high-mileage van, the first sign of a gearbox nearing the end of its life is often difficulty selecting gears under load — typical of 2.2 TDCi units used in flatbed or minibus form — before gear noise in drive or gear jumping begins to appear. Identification via the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable method to avoid a reference error on this model.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Ford model in stock?

We currently list 73 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Ford?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Ford?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
