Three engine codes for the Transit 2.4 TDCi: PHFA, PHFB and JXFA do not take the same gearbox

On the Transit 2.4 TDCi produced between 2000 and 2014, three engine codes exist: PHFA, PHFB and JXFA. This distinction is the first key to identification, as it directly determines which gearbox — 5 or 6 speeds — is correct for the vehicle. Reading the code stamped on the block before placing any order avoids the most common compatibility mistakes on this generation.

5-speed or 6-speed: what the engine code determines

The 2.4 TDCi was fitted with two families of manual gearbox. The 5-speed manual was fitted to the earlier versions within the 2000–2014 range, whilst the 6-speed manual appeared on later Transits or higher-powered variants. A vehicle from the same model year may therefore have either, depending on engine output and vehicle configuration: the engine code remains the deciding factor, not the year alone.

Key points to watch with the 2.4 TDCi

The 2.4 TDCi is a high-torque engine that places considerable strain on the 3rd and 4th gear synchromesh rings in the 5-speed gearbox — the typical symptom being difficult gear changes when cold or under load. On the 6-speed, wear tends to concentrate on the selector forks instead. In both cases, the exact reference of the original gearbox (visible on the plate or casing), cross-referenced with the engine code PHFA, PHFB or JXFA, allows compatibility to be confirmed before any work is carried out.
