ABFA: a single engine code for the Transit 2.0 TDCi, but two possible gearboxes between 2000 and 2006

On the Transit 2.0 TDCi of this generation, the engine code ABFA is the only identifier you need — it covers the entire production run from 2000 to 2006. However, this single code does not mean a single gearbox: depending on the year of manufacture and the vehicle configuration (payload, output power), the ABFA unit was paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed manual. Engine capacity alone is therefore not enough to determine the correct reference; the engine code confirms the family, but it is the reference stamped on the gearbox casing that settles the matter definitively.

Characteristics of the 2.0 TDCi compared with other Transit units

Unlike the 2.2 and 2.4 TDCi, whose production spans several distinct engine codes, the 2.0 TDCi covers its entire range under the single ABFA code. This simplifies engine identification, but does not remove the need to check the gearbox itself: 5-speed and 6-speed casing references are not interchangeable, and the reference prefixes (3C1R, 1C1R, GK2R, GK3R, KK2R, KK3R) reflect internal developments specific to each ratio. The Transit, often used in urban environments or for heavy haulage, subjects the gearbox to repeated torque stress on the lower gears — a point worth bearing in mind when diagnosing before replacement.
