The Ford Transit gearbox spanned four generations and nine engine variants between 2000 and 2023

Over twenty-three years of production, the Transit underwent a thorough revision of its drivetrain with each new generation. The early series (2000–2006) relied on 1.8 TDCi, 2.0 TDCi and 2.5 TDCi units paired with 5-speed manual gearboxes — this is the era of engine codes 4EA, 4EB, 4EC, 4GA, 4GB and RWPA. The following generation (2006–2013) introduced the 2.2 TDCi and the 2.4 TDCi, with 5- and 6-speed gearboxes coexisting depending on the engine output and the exact year of manufacture. From 2013 onwards, the 2.2 TDCi gradually moved over to 6-speed gearboxes, whilst the 3.2 TDCi — reserved for the heavier variants — was fitted exclusively with a 6-speed unit. Since 2019, the 2.0 EcoBlue has replaced the 2.2 TDCi as the diesel option, with its own 6-speed gearbox.

Why the engine code is the only reliable means of identification

The same Transit 2.2 TDCi can be fitted with either a 5- or 6-speed gearbox depending on its production date and payload configuration. The 2.0 TDCi also spans both families. Engine capacity alone is not enough: the engine code stamped on the block — from among the 39 codes referenced in this collection (DRFA, XWGA, SFCA, P9PA, ABFA, BHPA, etc.) — is the only reference that unambiguously determines which gearbox matches your vehicle. Casing references (6C1R, KK2R, BK3R, 98VT…) also vary by generation, making any approximate substitution a risky proposition on a van subjected to repeated heavy loads.

Known weak points depending on use

The Transit frequently operates at maximum load, which places greater strain on the lower-gear synchromesh rings and gearbox bearings. On the 5-speed 2.4 TDCi versions from the earlier generations, difficulty selecting 2nd and 3rd gear is the first reported sign of wear. On the post-2011 2.2 TDCi in 6-speed form, shifting problems tend to appear under prolonged cold-start conditions. The 1.5 TDCi and the 1.0 EcoBoost, found on the lighter van derivatives, are fitted with a specific 6-speed gearbox that is dimensionally distinct from that used in the heavier versions — there is no interchangeability between these two families.
