Focus from 1998 to 2021: a versatile hatchback whose intensive use accelerates engine wear

The Ford Focus is primarily a daily commuter car, frequently used in town on short journeys that never allow the engine to reach operating temperature. On diesel variants — 1.8 TDCi, 2.0 TDCi, 1.5 TDCi and 1.5 EcoBlue — this pattern of use encourages carbon build-up, premature piston ring wear and cylinder head problems. On petrol units — 1.0 EcoBoost, 1.5 EcoBoost and 1.6 Ti-VCT — repeated short trips are particularly damaging to lubrication and seal longevity. The result: a high-mileage or predominantly urban Focus often has an engine that is well past its best long before the diesels found in motorway-oriented saloons.

Seven engine variants, spanning very different engine code families

Between 1998 and 2021, the Focus was fitted with seven distinct engines. The one with the greatest number of variants is the 1.5 EcoBoost with sixteen engine codes (BNMA, M8DA, M8DB, M8DD, M8MA, M8MC, M8MD, M9DA, M9DB, M9DG, M9MA, M9MD, UNCE, UNCI, UNCJ, UNCK), which illustrates just how many different engines can share the same capacity depending on the generation and market. The 1.8 TDCi has eleven codes (18DIT, FFBA, FFDA, HCPC, KKDA, KKDB, QYBA, QYWA, RWPA, RWPC, RWPD), covering a long production period. The 2.0 TDCi encompasses seven codes (G6DA, G6DB, G6DC, G6DD, G6DE, G6DF, G6DG), as does the 1.5 TDCi (XUJG, XVGA, XVGB, XVGC, XVGVA, XWDE, XXDC). The 1.0 EcoBoost comes in six codes (B7DA, M1DA, M1DD, M1JA, M2DC, SFJD). The 1.5 EcoBlue (ZTDA) and the 1.6 Ti-VCT (HXDA) each have just one referenced code.

Engine code identification: the only reliable reference point on the Focus

On the Focus, the year of manufacture alone is not enough to identify the exact engine: the same engine family may have been produced in several code variants depending on power output, emissions standard or target market. Before placing any order, the engine code stamped on the block itself — which differs from the code shown on the V5C — is the reference that must be checked first. This is especially critical on the 1.5 EcoBoost and the 1.8 TDCi, whose many variants are not mechanically interchangeable. All engines listed here are bare engines, supplied without ancillaries.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a engine for this Ford model in stock?

We currently list 49 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Ford?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right engine for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old engine (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the engine for my Ford?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
