Eleven engine codes for the 1.8 TDCi Focus: what each code tells you about the right part to order

Between 1998 and 2011, the 1.8 TDCi was fitted to the Focus under eleven distinct engine codes: FFBA, FFDA, HCPC, KKDA, KKDB, QYBA, QYWA, RWPA, RWPC, RWPD and 18DIT. This is no mere administrative detail — each code corresponds to a specific mechanical variant, with its own dimensions, its own tolerances and, in some cases, a different cylinder head architecture. Ordering on the basis of engine capacity or quoted power output alone risks receiving an incompatible unit.

The engine code is stamped directly on the block and also appears on the vehicle registration document under section P5. The codes in the RWPA / RWPC / RWPD family represent successive evolutions of the same base unit, whilst the codes KKDA / KKDB and QYBA / QYWA denote variants with their own distinct characteristics, particularly in terms of power output. The 18DIT code, which is older, is found mainly on first-generation Focus models from around 1998. Cross-referencing the engine code with the year of manufacture remains the most reliable method for pinpointing exactly which version needs replacing.

Key points to watch with this diesel unit

The 1.8 TDCi in the Focus is known for issues with cylinder head cracking and premature liner wear on certain versions, particularly where the cooling system has been neglected. These failures affect the block itself and often make a complete replacement the more sensible option rather than a partial repair. The engines listed here are bare engines.
