On this generation of the 2.0 TDCi four-cylinder diesel, two problems recur notoriously: severe clogging of the EGR valve, which ultimately affects cylinder filling and combustion, and premature turbo wear, often made worse by neglected oil changes. In the most advanced cases, metal swarf circulates through the system and causes irreparable damage to the block. It is precisely this scenario that makes replacing the bare engine unavoidable rather than carrying out a partial repair.

Seven engine codes that must be distinguished

Between 2004 and 2011, this 2.0 TDCi was produced in seven distinct engine codes: G6DA, G6DB, G6DC, G6DD, G6DE, G6DF and G6DG. These codes correspond to different power output and calibration variants; an incorrect code will result in ordering an incompatible part. The code appears on a plate fixed to the block itself — this is the only reliable means of identification; the vehicle's registration date alone is not sufficient to distinguish between two closely related variants.
