Ford Mondeo diesel engine: from the 1.6 TDCi to the 2.0 TDCi, two engine families with distinct identification logic

Between 2007 and 2015, the Mondeo diesel was available in two engine capacities: the 1.6 TDCi and the 2.0 TDCi. These two families share neither block architecture nor engine codes, and the first thing to do before placing any order is to identify the code stamped on the block precisely — not simply the engine capacity shown on the registration document.

1.6 TDCi: eight variants, eight distinct codes

The 1.6 TDCi is the most widely represented engine in this range, with eight variants. The codes BH01, T1BB, T1DA, T1WA, T1WB, T3DA, T3DB and TZJB correspond to successive revisions introduced from 2011 onwards in particular, with specification differences that make these blocks non-interchangeable. A Mondeo carrying a T1DA code cannot mechanically accept a T3DB block without thoroughly checking the mounting points and ancillaries. Identical engine capacity does not guarantee compatibility: the engine code is the only reliable reference.

2.0 TDCi: four codes for the same engine capacity

The 2.0 TDCi comes in four codes: QXBA, QXBB, UBGA and UFBA. These variants cover different production phases over the 2007–2015 period and each code has its own mechanical characteristics. Again, two Mondeo 2.0 TDCi vehicles from the same year may carry different blocks depending on their trim level or target market. All engines in this range are offered as a bare engine: ancillaries (turbo, injection system, alternator, etc.) are not included and must be transferred from the old block.
