Mondeo diesel from 2007 to 2015: two engine capacities, twelve engine codes not to be confused

On this generation of Mondeo, Ford only offered diesel engines: the 1.6 TDCi and the 2.0 TDCi. Both units share the same platform but do not belong to the same engine family, and their reference codes are distinct. This guide covers twelve engine codes in total — eight for the 1.6 TDCi and four for the 2.0 TDCi — which illustrates just how insufficient engine capacity alone is when it comes to identifying the exact unit fitted to a given vehicle.

1.6 TDCi: more variants than it might appear

The Mondeo 1.6 TDCi covers the period 2010–2015 and includes codes such as T1DA, T1DB, T1WA, T1WB, T3DA, T3DB, TZJB and UBGA. These variants correspond to different power outputs (85, 95, 115 hp) and revisions to emissions management. A unit bearing the code T1DA cannot simply be swapped for a T3DA without prior verification: the auxiliary mounting points and sensors integrated into the block may differ. Always check the code stamped on the engine itself, not just the vehicle's manufacturer plate.

2.0 TDCi: four codes for a more uniform unit

The 2.0 TDCi, available from 2007 to 2015, is split across four codes — BH01, QXBA, QXBB and UFBA — corresponding primarily to power outputs of 115, 130, 140 and 163 hp. The higher-output versions (140 and 163 hp) feature different internal reinforcements; swapping between these variants requires a strict code match. This unit is known for premature wear of the hydraulic timing system in the early years of production — a typical symptom being a metallic rattling noise on cold starts.
