On the S-Max produced between 2006 and 2014, choosing a reconditioned engine starts with a clear fork in the road: the 1.8 TDCi diesel or the 2.0 Ti-VCT petrol. These two families share no parts whatsoever, and within each one the variants multiply: fourteen engine codes in total — ten for the 1.8 TDCi (N4JB, AOWA, AOBC, AOBA, RWPD, RWPC, QYWA, RWPA, QYBA, KKDB among others), four for the 2.0 Ti-VCT. A single 1.8 TDCi designation can cover different power outputs or production years depending on the code stamped on the block, which makes reading that code essential before placing any order.

When rebuilding your own engine makes sense

For the less common codes within the 1.8 TDCi range, rebuilding from the customer's original engine is a practical alternative: the engine sent in is reconditioned and then returned, avoiding any interchangeability issues between closely related variants. This option is particularly relevant when the engine code corresponds to a less widespread configuration or a late production run, where the availability of a replacement engine may be limited.

1.8 TDCi: the variety of engine codes — the main thing to watch

The 1.8 TDCi accounts for the vast majority of S-Max vehicles on the road. Its longevity is down to its relative robustness, but the sheer number of engine codes — driven by successive changes to the injection system and emissions standards between 2006 and 2014 — makes it the most difficult engine to identify correctly. The engine code, not the engine capacity alone, is the only reliable reference for matching the right engine to your vehicle. The 2.0 Ti-VCT petrol, less common on this model, is more straightforward to identify, with its four codes covering a narrower range.
