The S-Max 1.8 TDCi covers the period 2006 à 2014 and comes in ten distinct engine codes: RWPD, RWPC, RWPA, QYWA, QYBA, KKDB, KKDA, HCPC, FFBA and 18DIT. These codes correspond to power variants or production revisions that do not necessarily share the same internal components. The code is stamped directly on the block; it is this code — not simply the engine capacity or the vehicle's year — that determines the exact reference to order. Confusing two similar codes such as KKDA and KKDB can result in receiving an incompatible unit.

Known weaknesses of the Ford 1.8 TDCi

This diesel engine, derived from the PSA-Ford DLD family, is known to be susceptible to EGR valve fouling and turbo problems caused by insufficient oil maintenance. The most common symptoms before complete failure are persistent black smoke, a gradual loss of power, and hesitation under partial load. An accurate diagnosis of the engine code and the condition of the crankshaft remains essential before deciding whether a full engine replacement is necessary.
