1.5 TDCi or 1.0 EcoBoost: the engine code determines which version of the bare engine matches the EcoSport

On the EcoSport produced between 2013 and 2020, two engines are represented: the 1.5 TDCi diesel and the 1.0 EcoBoost petrol, and each covers several distinct engine codes that are not interchangeable. Reading the code physically stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference before placing any order.

1.5 TDCi: seven block variants not to be confused

The 1.5 TDCi diesel accounts for the majority of EcoSport units seen in the workshop, with seven engine codes on record: M1JJ, M1JU, XVGC, XVGB, XVGA, XXDC, XWDE. These variants reflect power and injection calibration changes spread across the 2013–2020 period. The same vehicle listed as a "1.5 TDCi" may be fitted with any one of them depending on the year of manufacture and the target market; only the code stamped on the block removes any doubt. This engine is known for weaknesses in the cylinder head and cooling circuit at high mileage — points to check before deciding whether a bare engine is sufficient or whether the cylinder head needs to be addressed separately.

1.0 EcoBoost: three codes for a turbo three-cylinder sensitive to lubrication

The 1.0 EcoBoost petrol comes in three engine codes on the EcoSport: XVGVA, XUJG, YYJB. This turbocharged three-cylinder shares its architecture with other Ford models from the same period, but internal dimensions and specifications vary by code. Its well-documented weakness lies in the timing belt integrated within the oil circuit: delayed engine oil changes accelerate premature wear of this assembly.
