Ford Focus petrol and diesel: what twenty-three years of versatility demands from a replacement engine

The Ford Focus is, above all, a family hatchback built for intensive use: daily commutes, long motorway runs, and occasionally spirited driving in ST trim. This usage profile places sustained thermal stress on the engine block, and that is precisely where weaknesses emerge: premature piston ring wear on early 1.0 EcoBoost units (codes SFDA, NNDA and related), cylinder head issues on certain 1.6 Ti-VCT engines (HXDA, XVGA, XVGB, XVGC), and injector fouling combined with piston wear on the 1.8 and 2.0 TDCi diesel generations. For a car produced from 1998 to 2021, the first challenge is not finding a bare engine — it is identifying precisely which one you need.

Before and after 2011: two diesel families with nothing in common

Up to 2011, the diesel Focus was built around the 1.8 TDCi (eleven engine codes, including FFDA, FFBA, KKDA, KKDB, RWPA, RWPC, RWPD) and the 2.0 TDCi (seven codes, including QYBA, QYWA, UNCI, UNCE, UNCJ, UNCK). From 2011 onwards, Ford switched to the 1.5 TDCi (codes M1DA, M1DD, M2DC, ZTDA, B7DA and two others) and 1.5 EcoBlue (M9MD) architectures. These blocks are not mechanically interchangeable: the sump, mountings, engine management and timing system all differ. The year of manufacture alone is not enough — the code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier when ordering the correct bare engine.

On the petrol side: sixteen variants for the 1.5 EcoBoost alone

The petrol range covers the naturally aspirated 1.6 Ti-VCT (two codes), the three-cylinder 1.0 EcoBoost (six codes including G6DA to G6DG, 18DIT, M8MD, M8MC), and the 1.5 EcoBoost, which alone accounts for sixteen distinct engine codes (M9DA, M9DB, M9DG, M9MA, M9MD, M8DB, and others). On this last unit, the stated output — 150 hp or 182 hp — does not always determine the code: mid-production changes to the cylinder head, turbo or engine management have created internal variants with no change to engine capacity or advertised power. Cross-referencing the model year, the power output, and above all the engine code remains essential before placing any order.
