The answer lies first and foremost in the engine code stamped on the identification plate, not in the engine capacity listed in the spec sheet. With Skoda, the same model and the same power output can come with a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a DSG 6 or a DSG 7 depending on the year of production and the trim level, which makes identification by engine alone unreliable.

Identification pitfalls specific to the Skoda range

The Octavia and the Fabia account for the majority of ambiguous cases. On the Octavia, the 1.6 TDI can be fitted with either a 5- or 6-speed gearbox depending on the generation, and the 2.0 TDI was available with both a 6-speed manual and a DSG 6 across the same model years. On the Fabia, the 1.2 (engine codes CBZA, CBZB, CJZA or BTS) and the 1.4 TDI share mechanically similar but non-interchangeable gearboxes. The Yeti, sitting between a compact and an SUV, uses transmissions derived from the Octavia II but with sump adaptations related to ground clearance. The Karoq and the Superb 4×4 feature DSG 7 variants specific to four-wheel-drive applications, which are distinct from the front-wheel-drive DSG 7.

For reconditioned DSG 6 and DSG 7 units sold on an exchange basis, the part is supplied with a new dual-clutch assembly and without the mechatronic unit: this electronic component is specific to your vehicle and must be retained or dealt with separately. This is a key structural point to confirm before placing any order.

Diesel and petrol: two different failure patterns

On the diesel side, the 1.9 TDI (engine codes BKC, BKP) fitted to the Octavia I and Fabia I are among the most in-demand gearboxes: their mileage at the point of failure is often higher than that of petrol equivalents. The 2.0 TDI on the Superb and Octavia III exhibits synchromesh wear on 3rd and 4th gear in manual versions subjected to heavy motorway use. On the petrol side, the dry-clutch DSG 7 (DQ200), found on the 1.2 TSI and 1.4 TSI, is well known for juddering in slow urban driving — a symptom of dual-clutch wear or mechatronic unit drift. The wet-clutch DSG 6 (DQ250), fitted to the 2.0 TSI and certain 1.8 TSI versions of the Superb, is structurally more robust for mixed use.
