11 Toyota models, around twenty engine codes: why the code is the only reliable way to identify the right gearbox

With Toyota, identifying a gearbox by engine capacity alone is a systematic source of error. The 1.4 D-4D can correspond to the code 1ND-TV or the 1CD-FTV depending on the model and production period, and the gearboxes associated with each are not the same. Likewise, the 2.0 petrol covers the codes 1ZZ-FE, 3ZZ-FE or 1ZR-FAE depending on the generation (E120, E140/E150), each paired with a different gearbox. Across this collection spanning model years 1998 to 2024, the code stamped on the engine block is therefore the essential starting point before placing any order.

Diesel D-4D: four engine code families, four pairing logics

Toyota D-4D engines are organised around four main families. The 1KD-FTV (3.0 D-4D) and 2KD-FTV (2.5 D-4D) are fitted primarily to the Land Cruiser and the Hilux with robust 6-speed manual gearboxes designed for mixed road and off-road use. The 1AD-FTV and 2AD-FTV (2.0 and 2.2 D-4D) are found on the Avensis, Auris, Corolla and Verso with 6-speed gearboxes, and also in the 2AD-FHV variant on certain Avensis models with a different configuration. The 1ND-TV (1.4 D-4D) powers the Yaris and Auris with a specific 5-speed gearbox. Finally, the codes DW10FC, DW10FD, DW10FE, DW10CD denote PSA-sourced engines fitted to the Proace: these are PSA-origin gearboxes and must not be confused with the Toyota transmissions in the D-4D range.

Petrol: from the 1KR-FE in the Aygo to the 2ZR-FE in the Corolla — gearboxes with nothing in common

The petrol range spans from the 1KR-FE (1.0, Aygo, Yaris) to 1.8 units such as the 2ZR-FAE or 2ZR-FE fitted to the Corolla, Auris and Urban Cruiser. In between, the codes 2NZ-FE and 2SZ-FE (1.3) as well as 4ZZ-FE (1.4) correspond to 5-speed gearboxes with different dimensions and final drive ratios. A notable feature: depending on the year, the RAV4 2.0 petrol was fitted with either a manual gearbox or a MultiMode transmission (an automated manual with no clutch pedal), sold without the automated actuator. Across all 11 referenced models — from the Yaris to the Land Cruiser — the engine code remains the only piece of information that points unambiguously to the correct reconditioned gearbox.
