5 Skoda models, 25 engine codes: what everyday use demands of the block

The Octavia is one of the most heavily used compact saloons in the European fleet: professional mileage, repeated motorway runs, sometimes taxi or private-hire duty. The Fabia, a city car with short cycles, racks up cold starts. The Superb, often laden with passengers and luggage, puts its diesel blocks under strain on long journeys. The Kodiaq, a family SUV, regularly carries heavy loads. These different uses place different mechanical demands on the engine, yet they all lead to the same conclusion: when a block fails, identifying the exact engine code becomes the first challenge.

25 engine codes for the same engine capacity: the Skoda identification trap

Skoda shares its technical platform with the VAG group, which multiplies the variants available at the same engine capacity. On the 2.0 TDI alone, the codes BMR, BMP, CBDB, CBDA, CUNA, CUPA coexist on the Octavia depending on the generation and power output — and these blocks are not interchangeable. The 1.9 TDI covers the codes BMM and AVQ, found on the Octavia and Roomster, with different architectures. On the petrol side, the 1.2 TSI comes in CHHB, DTSB, CHHA, three distinct blocks despite a shared engine capacity. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier; engine capacity and power output alone are never sufficient.

Petrol or diesel: different weak points depending on the engine family

TSI blocks (1.2, 1.4, 1.8, 2.0) are known for oil consumption issues related to piston rings on early generations, as well as timing chain failures on certain codes. TDI units, particularly the BMR and BMP in 170 hp, show weaknesses in the crankshaft and dual-mass flywheel under heavy use — a point to watch especially on Octavias in intensive service. The 1.6 TDI (codes CEGA, CFJA, CFHB) is less mechanically demanding but sensitive to fuel quality. The bare engines offered on an exchange basis cover all of these codes, from 1997 to 2024.
