On Toyota models, the sales method depends on both the part and the model

The Toyota range covers four part families — gearboxes, turbos, engines and transfer cases — with very different realities depending on what you are looking for. Turbos, of which there are many, are available new or on an exchange basis and cover a wide range of D-4D diesel engines (codes 2KD-FTV, 1KD-FTV, 1CD-FTV, 2AD-FHV, 2AD-FTV, 1VD-FTV among others) as well as a number of petrol units. Gearboxes are mostly 5- or 6-speed manuals and cover popular models such as the Corolla, Auris, Avensis and RAV4, as well as high-mileage workhorses like the Hilux and Land Cruiser. It is on these latter models — or on older or low-volume vehicles — that rebuilding the customer's own unit really comes into its own: when no exchange unit exists for a rare reference or an older generation, rebuilding your own gearbox or engine guarantees you get back exactly the original part, with its full fitting history.

D-4D diesel: check the engine code before ordering

Toyota has produced numerous diesel variants under very similar names. The 2.0 D-4D covers engine codes as different as 1CD-FTV, 1AD-FTV and also DW10FD, DW10FE (engines shared with PSA, notably on the Proace). The 1.4 D-4D is available with the 1ND-TV code (90 hp) but also with the 2WZ-TV code depending on the model and production period. The 2.2 D-4D comes in 2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV variants (the D-CAT version with exhaust gas recirculation), which do not share the same parts. Checking the code stamped on the engine is essential before identifying any part, particularly on the Avensis, Auris and RAV4, whose generations overlap between 1998 and 2024.

Land Cruiser, Hilux, Proace: special cases within the range

The Land Cruiser is the most represented model in the range. It uses specific mechanical units — 1KD-FTV in 3.0, 1VD-FTV in 4.5 V8 twin-turbo — and the transfer case available in the range is primarily intended for it. The Hilux shares some of these engines and gearboxes with the Land Cruiser, which sometimes makes identification easier, though not always: the generation and 4x4 configuration remain decisive factors. The Proace, a light commercial vehicle of PSA origin sold under the Toyota badge, uses engines and gearboxes shared with the Citroën/Peugeot ranges, which broadens the possibilities for reconditioned exchange units but means you must always start from the exact engine code rather than the commercial name alone.
