Toyota diesel and petrol: the weak points differ between pre- and post-2005 models

On pre-2005 Toyota models, it is the 1KZ-TE (3.0 TD) that attracts the most serious reports: cylinder head cracks caused by overheating, often made worse by a turbo that has reached the end of its life. Over the same period, the 1CD-FTV (2.0 D-4D) is well known for connecting rod and crankshaft problems at high mileage. The direct consequence is that on these generations it is the bare engine that is most commonly affected, and the condition of the original block determines the most appropriate sales method — exchange or rebuilding the customer's own unit.

From 2005 onwards: turbos and gearboxes under scrutiny

The 2AD-FTV / 2AD-FHV (2.2 D-4D, codes 2ADFTV and 2AD-FHV) family introduced on the Avensis, Auris and RAV4 from 2005 onwards saw recurring variable-geometry turbo failures: clogged vanes, gradual power loss, and black or blue smoke under acceleration. This is why the turbo represents the largest Toyota family in the catalogue on this site. The 1KD-FTV (3.0 D-4D, Land Cruiser, Hilux, Proace) exhibits manual gearbox wear on 6-speed units at high mileage, particularly in mixed road and off-road use.

Identifying the right part: the year and engine code are critical

The 2.0 D-4D is a perfect illustration of the identification pitfall: depending on the model and year, it covers engine codes as different as 1AD-FTV, 1CD-FTV, DW10FD or DW10FE — blocks and gearboxes that are not interchangeable. Likewise, the 2.2 D-4D is available in 136, 150 and 177 hp variants, each with distinct codes depending on the power output and whether or not the D-CAT system is fitted. On the Aygo and Yaris 1.4 D-4D, the code 1ND-TV is shared across several power outputs (75 and 90 hp), yet the associated gearboxes differ. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference before placing any order, regardless of the stated engine capacity.
