Why does the Hiace 3.0 D-4D turbo fail?
On the Toyota Hiace fitted with the 1KD-FTV engine, the variable-geometry turbo is put under considerable strain by typical van use: heavy loads, stop-start urban driving interspersed with motorway runs, and frequent cold starts. The most common causes of failure on this engine are degraded or incorrect engine oil, missed service intervals, a clogged air filter starving the turbo of clean airflow, or a leaking intercooler upsetting boost pressure. Revving the engine hard immediately after a cold start — before the turbo has had time to lubricate properly — also accelerates bearing wear.

Fitting advice for the Hiace 1KD-FTV
Before fitting, check the oil circuit (hoses and return line), the cleanliness of the air intake, and the condition of the intercooler. You must prime the turbo with oil before the first start-up to ensure immediate bearing lubrication. Payment for your order can be spread over several instalments, in up to 10 instalments.
- Check for excessive play on the turbo shaft before removal
- Replace the air filter and inspect the intercooler
- Observe the oil change interval using a suitable quality oil
