Ford Galaxy turbo: from the Volkswagen 1.9 TDI to the Ford 2.0 EcoBoost – two different forced-induction philosophies

The Galaxy covers an unusually wide range: its diesel engines are partly sourced from Volkswagen (the 1.9 TDI, engine codes ANU, AUY, ASZ, BTB) and partly from Ford (the 1.8 TDCi and 2.0 TDCi), while the petrol range comes down to the 2.0 EcoBoost 240 (codes R9CD, R9CI, TPWA) and the 2.5 T 225 (code RNC2P25-LT). This dual manufacturer origin is significant: it means two entirely unrelated turbo families, with very different geometries, actuators and thermal demands.

Diesel: variable geometry on the VW side, wastegate on the Ford side

The variable-geometry 1.9 TDI units (moving vanes) are prone to gradual vane fouling, which causes whistling and a drop in boost pressure. The 1.9 TDI 90 (code ANU) is the only engine on this page whose turbo is available as a reconditioned unit; the other 1.9 TDI variants (AUY, ASZ, BTB) are covered by new parts. The Ford diesels — 1.8 TDCi (codes FFWA, QYWA, CDLYNX) and 2.0 TDCi (codes AZWA, AZWC, KLWA, QXWA, QXWB, QXWC, TYWA, UKWA) — use wastegate turbos, which are mechanically simpler, but whose actuator and bearing seals remain the most common failure points. Note that codes FFWA and QYWA appear under two separate 1.8 TDCi groups in the catalogue: check the exact power output (100, 115 or 125 hp) to select the correct manufacturer reference.

Petrol: high thermal stress – root causes must not be overlooked

The 2.0 EcoBoost 240 and the 2.5 T 225 run at exhaust gas temperatures significantly higher than those of a diesel. The bearings and seals of petrol turbos are therefore subjected to far more aggressive thermal cycling; degraded oil or a delay in lubrication at start-up will accelerate wear considerably. Smoke under acceleration, whistling or a drop in boost pressure on these engines means the oil supply and hoses must be checked before any replacement is carried out. All turbos in this collection are sold new, with the exception of the 1.9 TDI 90, which is available as a reconditioned unit. Identifying and addressing the root cause of the failure is essential before fitting any part, regardless of the engine.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Ford Galaxy Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Ford Galaxy Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
