On the diesel Expert, engine capacity alone does not determine which gearbox was fitted at the factory

An Expert 2.0 HDi can come with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed manual, depending on the year of first registration and the trim level. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable identifier before placing any order.

The Expert covered here spans the years 2000 à 2016 and three diesel engines exclusively: the 1.9 HDi (code WJZ/DW8), the 1.6 HDi (codes 9HU, 9H06, 9H07) and the 2.0 HDi (codes RHZ, RHK, RHG). The 1.9 HDi is paired exclusively with a 5-speed; the 1.6 HDi and 2.0 HDi can take either configuration depending on the generation of the vehicle.

Why the engine code takes precedence over engine capacity

Between an RHZ and an RHK — both 2.0 HDi — the axle ratio and torque transfer profile differ, meaning the associated gearboxes are not mechanically interchangeable. Likewise, on the 1.6 HDi, code 9HU (the 90 hp version) does not share the same mechanical interface as codes 9H06 or 9H07, which came with later revisions. Using engine capacity as the sole criterion will result in ordering an incompatible part.

Commercial use and the specific demands placed on the Expert

As a light commercial vehicle used primarily under load, the Expert subjects its transmission to high torque stresses at low revs — particularly in urban environments or during repeated loading cycles. The most common symptoms on these manual gearboxes — difficulty engaging 1st gear or reverse when cold, rumbling in 4th or 5th under load — are generally indicative of synchromesh wear rather than structural failure.
