5 engine variants on the Expert since 1998: which one actually fits your vehicle?

The Expert spans 27 years of production and five distinct diesel families, making identification more complex than it might seem. The engine size shown on paper — 2.0 HDi, 1.6 HDi or 1.5 BlueHDi — is not enough: it is the engine code stamped on the block that determines the exact reference.

Four generations of blocks, with codes that do not overlap

The 2.0 HDi is by far the most common engine in the Expert range, with 22 engine codes listed in the collection — from the early RHW, RH02 versions of the 2000s through to the DW10FDDU (EHT), DW10FDCU (EHZ) variants found in more recent generations. These codes are not interchangeable: a DW10FC does not share the same internal architecture as a DW10FD, even with an identical engine capacity. The 1.9 D (codes WJY, DW8) covers the early years of the range up to the early 2000s, with a mechanically simpler engine and no common rail. The 1.6 HDi (DV6, 6 distinct codes) was fitted to the mid-range versions, whilst the 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5RUC/DV5RUCD) is exclusive to the third-generation Expert from 2016 onwards.

Key points to check by engine type

On the common-rail 2.0 HDi, head gasket failures and EGR valve issues are recurring symptoms that frequently precede the decision to replace the block. On the 1.6 HDi DV6, turbo fragility and sealing problems are well documented on this generation of PSA engine. For the 1.5 BlueHDi, the codes DV5RUC (YHV) and DV5RUCD (YHR) refer to two distinct variants: checking the full code, including the suffix in brackets, is essential before placing any order. All engines listed here are bare engines.
