Why does high mileage on a 508 accelerate wear on the engine block?

The Peugeot 508 is primarily a long-distance saloon and high-mileage family car. Designed for motorway journeys and company fleets, it commonly accumulates 200,000 to 300,000 km within just a few years, subjecting its engine blocks to repeated thermal and mechanical stress. The practical result: premature wear to the piston rings, bearings or timing components, which makes replacing the bare engine a more sensible option than a partial repair.

Three engine families, nine engine codes — don't mix them up

The 508 sold between 2010 and 2018 was offered with three engines. The 2.0 HDi diesel is by far the most represented in the range, with seven distinct references covering engine codes DW10FC (AHW), DW10BTED4 (RHF) and DW10FD (AHR) — three variants of the same PSA block, differing in their emissions standard, power output and timing architecture. Mixing up these codes when ordering is the most common mistake: the engine code stamped on the block is essential to avoid any compatibility issues. On the petrol side, the 1.6 THP (codes UFDB, UFDA, UFBA, TXWA) is a turbocharged unit known to be sensitive to lubrication; wear most commonly affects the camshafts and crankshaft bearings. The 1.6 VTi naturally aspirated unit (codes 5FV, 5F02) is more robust but accounts for a smaller proportion of this generation of 508.

Bare engine: what the unit includes — and what it doesn't

All engines listed here are supplied as bare units: the reconditioned block does not include ancillaries (turbo, alternator, starter motor, injection pump, etc.), which the technician either transfers from the original engine or orders separately. This directly affects the cost of the job and should be factored in before placing an order. The only purchasing option available in this range is on an exchange basis: the old block must be returned once the reconditioned engine has been fitted.
