308 petrol or diesel, first or second generation: which bare engine is the exact match for your block?

The answer doesn't come down to engine capacity alone. On the 308, the same quoted power output can cover very different engine families depending on the vehicle's generation and year of production, and the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier when ordering the correct part.

Diesel: DV6 and DW10 – two families, forty distinct engine codes

The 1.6 HDi covers the first generation (2007–2013) with codes such as 9HW, 9HX, DV6ATED4, DV6BTED4, DV6DTED, DV6ETED and the second generation with codes of the type T1DA, T1WA, T3DA, NGDA, NGDB among others — these two groups are not interchangeable. The 2.0 HDi (DW10 family) comes in eighteen references ranging from AHZ to UFDB, with codes G6DA to G6DG, QXBA, QXBB, RH02, UBGA, UFBA, UFDA, UFDB, DW10CTED4_RHH, DW10FC_AHW, DW10FD_AHX: each corresponds to a specific power and emissions configuration. Finally, the 1.5 BlueHDi (codes DV5RC_YHZ and YH01) is fitted exclusively to the second generation from 2017 onwards and shares no parts with the 1.6 HDi despite the similar engine capacity.

Petrol: three blocks, very different mechanical histories

The 1.6 VTi (codes 5F02, 5PV) is a naturally aspirated first-generation block with no turbo and none of the thermal stresses associated with forced-induction variants. The 1.6 THP is available in two variants listed separately: the 156 hp version (code EP6CDT 5FV) and a distinct version carrying the code 5FV — power output alone is not enough to tell them apart without checking the full code. The 1.2 PureTech (codes EB2DT, EB2DTS_HNY, EB2F_HMZ, HM01, HN01) is fitted to the second-generation 308 from 2013 onwards: this turbocharged three-cylinder has a documented history of timing chain issues, which explains the high demand for complete block replacement. All of these engines are available as bare engines, without ancillaries, covering the 2007–2021 period.
