308 petrol or diesel engine, first or second generation: which one actually matches your block?

The answer comes down to the model generation first, not the engine capacity. A 308 from 2009 and a 308 from 2016 may both show "1.6 HDi" on the windscreen without sharing a single internal component: the first-generation DV6 family (9HW, 9HX, DV6ATED4, DV6BTED4) is replaced on the T9 by entirely different codes (DV6FC, DV5RC). It is the engine code stamped on the block — not the power output or engine capacity — that determines the exact reference.

Six engine variants, two family logics

The catalogue covers six engine variants from 2007 to 2021, split across two ranges. On the diesel side, the 1.6 HDi and 2.0 HDi dominate the T7 (2007–2013), each with eighteen references; the 1.5 BlueHDi takes over on the T9 (2013–2021) with two distinct references depending on the version. On the petrol side, the 1.6 VTi (codes 5F02, 5FV, 5PV) and the 1.6 THP cover the T7, while the 1.2 PureTech (codes EB2F, EB2DTS, five references) is fitted to the T9. The 2.0 HDi spans eighteen different codes (G6DA to G6DG, DW10FC, DW10FD, DW10CTED4…): a range that reflects emissions and power output changes, not interchangeable parts.

Key points to watch by block

On the 1.6 HDi T7, the distinction between DV6ATED4 and DV6BTED4 follows emissions revisions: a block designed for one cannot be fitted to the other without modification. The 2.0 HDi DW10 has crankshaft and cylinder head variants depending on the power stage (110, 136, 150 hp); the engine code is the only reliable guide. The 1.2 PureTech EB2 is well known for timing chain issues on versions built before 2019: the reference of the reconditioned bare engine to order must match the relevant revision. The 1.5 BlueHDi (UFBA, UFDA, UFDB) is only available in two references within this range; confusing it with the 1.6 BlueHDi found on other PSA models is a common mistake to avoid.
