308 petrol or diesel, first or second generation: which engine block matches which code?

The answer comes down to two things: the generation of the 308 (T7 from 2007 to 2013, T9 from 2013 to 2021) and the engine code stamped on the block, because the same engine capacity can cover entire block families with no parts in common. This page covers eight engine variants, from the 1.2 petrol to the 2.0 diesel, and only the engine codes allow the exact reference to be identified.

Diesel: two families — DV6 and DW10 — with very different codes

The 1.6 HDi is the most widely represented engine in the range, with eighteen references covering the entire first generation. It brings together codes as varied as 9HW, 9HX, DV6ATED4, DV6BTED4, DV6DTED, DV6ETED, DV6FC_BHZ on the T7 side, and T1DA, T1WA, T3DA, TZJA on the T9 side — these codes are not interchangeable and do not share the same block. The 2.0 HDi also reaches eighteen references, with the DW10 family available under codes DW10CTED4_RHH, DW10FC_AHW, DW10FD_AHX as well as the series G6DA to G6DG, QXBA, QXBB, AHZ, RH02, UFBA, UFDA, UFDB. The 2.0 BlueHDi 180 (code EHZ / DW10FC) and the 1.5 BlueHDi (codes DV5RC_YHZ, YH01) are exclusive to the second-generation T9, with just one reference each in the range.

Petrol: three block families and a naming pitfall

The 1.6 VTi (codes 5F02, 5PV) and the 1.6 THP (code 5FV) share the same engine capacity but belong to distinct families — naturally aspirated on one side, turbocharged on the other. The 1.6 THP 156 has its own code EP6CDT 5FV and must not be confused with the standard 1.6 THP despite sharing the same engine capacity. Finally, the five references for the 1.2 PureTech (codes EB2DT, EB2DTS_HNY, EB2F_HMZ, HM01, HN01) cover the T9 exclusively from 2013 onwards. For every block, the engine code is the only reliable criterion: engine capacity and year alone are not sufficient to determine the correct reference.
