Expert 1.6 HDi: three engine codes across two gearbox families, with synchros that wear quickly under van use

On this 1.6 HDi unit fitted between 2007 and 2016, the three engine codes 9HU, 9H06 and 9H07 do not all share the same transmission. The 9HU, the earlier of the three, is paired with the 5-speed manual; the later 9H06 and 9H07 variants use the 6-speed manual. Mixing up the two families results in a unit that is mechanically incompatible: the casing, the bell housing and the gear selector mechanism all differ.

Well-known symptoms on this unit under van use

The Expert is subjected to heavy, repeated load cycles that place abnormal stress on the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros. The tell-tale symptom is difficult or notchy gear changes when downshifting, particularly noticeable from cold. On the 5-speed, the primary shaft bearing is also known to develop a progressive whine — a sign of advanced wear that can appear even before the synchros give way. Both of these failures regularly lead to a complete replacement rather than a partial repair, as the casing is often found to be damaged by the time a late diagnosis is made.

Check the engine code before ordering

The registration date gives a rough guide, but it is the engine code stamped on the block that unambiguously determines which gearbox family is compatible. A 2010 Expert can carry either a 9HU or a 9H06 depending on the assembly line it came from. Identifying this code beforehand avoids any ordering error across the seven references available within this range.
