9HZ, 9HR, 9HP, 9HD: each engine code on the 308 1.6 HDi requires a different gearbox

On the 308 1.6 HDi produced between 2007 and 2013, four engine codes coexist and each is associated with different gearbox references. The 9HZ (90 hp, present from 2007) and the 9HD always take a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 9HR (112 hp, introduced from 2010 with the FAP update) and the 9HP are paired with the 6-speed manual gearbox. Mixing up the two families when ordering results in an incompatible part: the ratios, casing and selector mechanism differ between the two generations.

Identifying the correct family from the engine code

The engine code, visible on a label on the block or in the manufacturer's documentation, is the essential starting point before placing any order. The available references cover both families — 5-speed and 6-speed — with different internal dimensions and primary shaft lengths. A vehicle described as a '1.6 HDi 112 hp' without the engine code verified remains ambiguous: some 2009–2010 examples coexisted with both blocks depending on the market. Checking for 9HR or 9HP for the 6-speed, 9HZ or 9HD for the 5-speed is the only way to avoid an incorrect reference.
