Reconditioned Renault Clio Gearbox

Clio from 1991 to 2019: a single manual transmission, but the move from 5 to 6 speeds doesn't follow the same logic depending on whether you're looking at petrol or diesel

Across the entire Clio range, every available gearbox is either manual or automated manual via the Quickshift, offered exclusively on the 1.5 dCi. There is no torque-converter automatic or dual-clutch option here. With that clarified, the real complexity lies elsewhere: the number of ratios, the internal gearing and compatibility all depend on the engine, the year, and sometimes the engine code alone.

Petrol: 5-speed dominates, with 6-speed appearing only on certain units

The older petrol engines — 1.8 (F3P, F7P), 1.4 (E7J, K4J), 1.2 (D4F, D7F) — are fitted exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 1.6 (K4M, K7M) can take either a 5 or 6-speed depending on the version. The 2.0 F4R covers both ratios, with internal differences according to use — sporting or general-purpose — already covered on its dedicated page. The modern TCe units (0.9 TCe codes H4B/H4Bt, 1.0 TCe codes H4D, H4D450, H4D470, 1.0 TCe 90 code H4D) mark the shift to more recent architectures: the 1.0 TCe and 1.0 TCe 90 can be fitted with either a 5 or 6-speed gearbox depending on the exact variant.

Diesel: the K9K and its six engine code variants

The 1.5 dCi is built entirely around the K9K family — six distinct codes in the range (K9K, K9K 700, K9K 704, K9K 764, K9K 766, K9K 768) — and it is the most widely represented engine in the collection. It is the only one to offer three gearbox types: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and Quickshift. The Quickshift is an automated manual gearbox with mechanical actuators; it is sold without the actuator unit, the replacement of which is handled separately. The precise engine code remains the essential starting point for identifying which unit corresponds to which K9K: a single model year of the Clio dCi may have been fitted with several different codes depending on the market or power output.
