On the Clio, the same 1.5 dCi can take three different gearboxes depending on the engine code

This is the most common pitfall on this model: the 1.5 dCi alone covers thirteen distinct references, spread across a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual and the Quickshift automated manual gearbox. The difference is not down to engine capacity but to the engine code: K9K 700, K9K 704, K9K 764, K9K 766 and K9K 768 do not share the same gearbox, and a mix-up at this stage will result in an incompatible part. The engine code stamped on the casing is the only reference that matters — even before the year of manufacture.

Petrol: very mixed gearbox families depending on the generation

On the petrol side, the Clio spans the period from 1991 to 2019, with engines as varied as the D7F, D4F, E7J, F3P, F7P (small-capacity 1.2 and 1.4 units, always with a 5-speed manual) and the K4M, K7M, K4J on the 1.6. The 1.0 TCe and 0.9 TCe introduce the codes H4B, H4Bt, H4D, H4D450, H4D470, with a possible move to 6 speeds. The 2.0 (F4R) and the 1.8 remain on a 5- or 6-speed manual depending on the exact variant. Within the same generation, a Clio RS and a standard Clio 1.6 naturally aspirated saloon do not take the same gearbox, even with an identical engine.

Quickshift: specifics of the automated version

The Quickshift is an automated manual gearbox, found only on certain 1.5 dCi models. It is supplied without the automated actuator: the mechanical part of the gearbox is fully reconditioned, but the electrohydraulic actuator is not included with the unit. This is a fundamental difference from a conventional manual gearbox and must be taken into account before ordering. Both available options — exchange and rebuild of your own unit — apply to all families within this collection.
