On the Clio, the same 1.0 or 1.6 does not take the same gearbox depending on the year and engine code

This is the most common mistake on this model: ordering a gearbox by engine capacity without checking the engine code. The 1.6, for example, covers two quite distinct families — K4M and K7M — which do not accept the same manual gearbox, and depending on the generation, it is either a 5- or 6-speed. The same logic applies to the 1.0 TCe: the codes H4D, H4D450, H4D470 coexist in the file, with 5- or 6-speed gearboxes depending on the model year. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference — not the engine capacity, not the first registration date alone.

Ten engine variants, three gearbox types: finding your way around the Clio range (1991–2019)

The collection covers ten petrol and diesel engine variants, from the Clio I to the Clio IV. On the petrol side, the older units 1.8 (F3P/F7P) and 1.4 (E7J/K4J) are fitted exclusively with a 5-speed manual. So is the 0.9 TCe (H4B/H4Bt). The 2.0 F4R and the 1.0 TCe, however, are available in both ratios — 5 and 6 speeds — which again makes it essential to identify the exact gearbox reference fitted as original equipment. On the diesel side, the 1.5 dCi K9K is the most widely represented engine variant in the range and the only one to include a Quickshift — a single-clutch automated manual gearbox — in addition to the 5- and 6-speed manuals.

Two supply options depending on the condition of your original unit

Clio gearboxes are offered under two arrangements: dispatch of a reconditioned unit in exchange for the return of your old one, or reconditioning of your own gearbox, which is then returned to you. This second option, known as a rebuild, is intended for cases where the reference is rare or where traceability of the original unit matters — particularly on sporting variants such as the Clio RS (2.0 F4R), whose gearbox ratios differ depending on track or road use. The Quickshift for the 1.5 dCi is sold without the actuator or robot unit: it is the mechanical section alone that is reconditioned.
