Clio 1.5 dCi: from the 5-speed gearbox to the Quickshift – what the K9K went through between 2001 and 2019

Over an eighteen-year career, the K9K unit was not paired with a single gearbox. Three families exist within this range: the 5-speed manual, the 6-speed manual and the Quickshift, an automated manual gearbox with an electrohydraulic actuator. The choice depends not at all on the power output required, but on the year of production and the exact engine code: a K9K 700 or K9K 704 from the early Clio III does not take the same gearbox as a K9K 764, K9K 766 or K9K 768 from later model years.

5- or 6-speed manual: two casing families, non-interchangeable references

The 5-speed gearbox (references JR5 and TL4) is fitted to entry-level and mid-range versions, notably on the Clio II and early Clio III. The 6-speed appears on the more powerful K9K variants and on the Clio IV. The casings, shafts and crown-wheel-and-pinion sets differ: a JR5059 reference cannot be substituted for a JR5332 or JR5335 without first checking the engine code and the year of first registration. Confusing these two families is the most common identification pitfall with this engine.

The Quickshift: automated manual without the actuator

The Quickshift is an automated manual gearbox, fitted to certain Clio III and IV models equipped with the K9K. It is supplied without the robot unit or actuator: this electrohydraulic component must be dealt with separately, as its faults are independent of the gearbox's internal mechanics. A symptom of the gearbox dropping into forced manual mode or refusing to engage a gear typically points to the actuator, not the gearbox itself — a point to check before placing any order.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Renault model in stock?

We currently list 14 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Renault?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Renault?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
