An everyday city car, but manual or Quickshift automated: two very different transmission realities on the Twingo

A city car puts its gearbox through a very different kind of punishment compared with a road car: repeated clutch engagement in heavy traffic, constant shifting between first and second gear, and endless stop-start cycles. On the Twingo, this intensive use of the lower ratios accelerates wear on the synchromesh rings and selector forks — particularly on gearboxes that have clocked up several hundred thousand kilometres in urban use. This is precisely why the transmission is so often the first major mechanical component to give up the ghost on this model.

The 1.2 covers the widest range: D7F, D4F and the Quickshift variant

With eight references in the catalogue, the 1.2 is by far the most common engine fitted to the Twingo over the 1993–2014 period. It encompasses two distinct engine codes, D7F and D4F, which do not take the same gearboxes — engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct reference. Add to this the Quickshift transmission, a 5-speed automated manual gearbox offered on certain trim levels of the 1.2. The Quickshift operates without a clutch pedal but is based on a conventional manual gearbox mechanism controlled by an external actuator — the actuator is not supplied with the gearbox. The engine code stamped on the block remains the essential starting point for identifying the correct reference among these variants.

1.6, 1.0 and 0.9 TCe: three engines, each with its own 5-speed manual gearbox

The 1.6 (K4M / K4M854) is fitted to the Sport and RS versions of the Twingo II and uses a specific 5-speed manual gearbox, distinct from that of the 1.2. The 1.0 (H4D400) and the 0.9 TCe (H4B) belong to the third generation of the model, each with its own 5-speed manual gearbox — the bell housings and gear ratios differ, and these units are not interchangeable with one another. On the Twingo III, the rear-mounted engine layout requires a specific transmission found on no other generation of the model. The engine code remains the only reliable criterion for avoiding confusion between these engine families, which are otherwise close in capacity.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Renault model in stock?

We currently list 11 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Renault?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Renault?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
