Two engine codes, two gearboxes: twenty-one years of evolution of the 1.2 Twingo

Between 1993 and 2014, the 1.2 Twingo spanned two generations and two distinct engine families: the D7F for the first Twingo, the D4F for the second. This change of engine block brings a complete break on the transmission side: the gearboxes associated with these two codes are not interchangeable. Identifying the correct engine code, stamped on the block, is an essential prerequisite before placing any order.

Manual JB1 or Quickshift: what the year of first registration reveals

The 5-speed manual gearbox from the JB1 family (references JB1517, JB1518, JB1521, JB1524, JB1525, JB1132…) is fitted to the vast majority of 1.2 Twingos across the entire production period. The Quickshift — an automated manual gearbox — appears exclusively on the second generation with the D4F; it is sold without the actuator or robot unit, as the electromechanical component is handled separately. The exact JB1 reference varies according to the model year and axle ratio, meaning two 1.2 Twingos with the same engine code may carry gearboxes with different ratios: checking the original reference on the gearbox itself remains the most reliable method.

Two reconditioning options available

These gearboxes are available on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of your own unit, depending on whether you wish to send in your original gearbox to be reconditioned and returned, or to receive a reconditioned unit directly. The D7F, the engine fitted to the earliest Twingos produced from 1993 through to the late 1990s, is found mainly in high-mileage vehicles: wear to the differential and bearings is the most common issue to watch for on this generation of JB1.
