Kangoo from 1997 to 2021: which engine for each generation and fuel type?

The vast majority of engines in this collection are the 1.5 dCi K9K-based, with 28 distinct engine codes listed: K9K292, K9K636, K9K646, K9K656, K9K657, K9K700, K9K702, K9K704, K9K710, K9K714, K9K716, K9K718, K9K734, K9K740, K9K780, K9K790, K9K792, K9K802, K9K804, K9K806, K9K808, K9K820, K9K837, K9K846, K9K892, K9K896, K9K_872 and K9K_876. This variety reflects successive emissions regulations (Euro 3 to Euro 6), differences in power output and generation-specific adaptations for the Kangoo. Two codes from the same model year may correspond to different power or equipment variants — the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier.

Symptoms and points to watch depending on the unit

The F8Q 632 (1.9 D) is a robust engine but prone to fouling of the mechanical injection pump, which is common on vehicles with a low annual mileage. On the earliest versions of the K9K (codes 292, 636, 700), EGR valve faults and turbocharger failures are well-known symptoms, often mistaken for internal wear of the block. The more recent codes (K9K_872, K9K_876, K9K896) incorporate updates to the valve timing and engine management systems that make them incompatible with the engine mounts and ECUs of earlier generations. All engines are supplied as bare units.
