The diesel engines in the Laguna have well-documented weaknesses that vary depending on engine capacity

On the Laguna II and III (2001–2015), four families of diesel engines exist: the 2.2 dCi (G9T), the 2.0 dCi (M9R), the 1.9 dCi (F9Q) and the 1.5 dCi (K9K). Each has well-known weak points that regularly lead to the replacement of the bare engine. The G9T is known for crankshaft and bearing problems at high mileage, with abnormal oil consumption as an early warning sign. The M9R, fitted to the Laguna III from 2007 onwards, is prone to cylinder head cracking and timing system failures, often preceded by persistent white smoke or a gradual loss of power. The F9Q, the engine block used in the Laguna II, suffers from high-pressure injection pump wear and severe EGR circuit fouling. The K9K, less common on this model, remains susceptible to turbo and connecting rod problems at high mileage.

Identify the correct engine code before ordering

A single engine capacity covers several variants depending on the year and power output. The G9T alone comes in nine distinct codes (G9T-600 to G9T-707), the M9R in eight (M9R750 to M9R802), the F9Q in seven (F9Q-670 to F9Q-774), and the K9K in five (K9K292 to K9K806). These engine blocks are not interchangeable between codes: the engine capacity shown on the registration document is not sufficient to select the correct part. The engine code stamped on the block — visible on the manufacturer's plate or in the vehicle's technical documentation — is the only reliable identifier to avoid ordering errors.
